"Dog" is a word with ominous undertones in the underworld

This Twitter post from the lawyer Chris Murphy about Ralph Blewitt is just awful.

A dog in police/crook parlance is a person who has co-operated with police and put-in fellow criminals.   Named dogs are often "offed".   To be "offed" is to be murdered, as was the case with Lewis Moran of the Melbourne crime family, whose last words were "I'm off here".

Ralph Blewitt has done an honourable thing in coming forward to give a complete account of his role in The AWU Scandal.  He has no protection from prosecution.   Blewitt is helping the state, that is us, to find out what happened to the money and who was in on the giggle.  He should have our support and not this horribly unsubtle suggestion from a prominent lawyer.
