It's important we stick to the facts in The AWU Scandal - the $5,000 cash deposit in J Gillard's account
Sunday, 25 November 2012
Steve's report canvasses a number of subjects.
There's Wilson's blanket statement that Julia Gillard "did nothing wrong" according to Bruce.
There's Wilson's character assessment about Ralph Blewitt and Blewitt's veracity.
My personal Wilson favourite is this, "Whatever people are alleging is a nonsense." There must be something about working for the AWU because Wilson's statement is up there with Bill Shorten's "Whatever the PM said, I agree with it".
All of that is predictable and is simply the Bruce Wilson view of the world.
But Steve then moves in his next paragraph to a statement of fact that is simply wrong. It's material, it's important and as the News Limited newspapers are currently reporting, it is wrong.
The paragraph is this, still on the HeraldSun website now at 5.05PM Sunday night.
Mr Wilson is alleged by another AWU official, Wayne Hem, to have given him $5000 cash he said he won at a casino, and asked him to deposit the money in Ms Gillard's bank account in mid-1995.
Asked whether he had asked Mr Hem to do that, Mr Wilson said: "Look, it's possible, but I don't specifically recall."
I am familiar with the Statutory Declaration sworn by Wayne Hem and relied on by The Australian newspaper. Mr Hem does not state that the $5,000 deposited in Ms Gillard's account was won at a casino, the statement does not indicate in any way that Wilson or Bill the Greek won the money at the casino, in fact Hem's statement records that Wilson and The Greek said they lost.
But Steve's report has been picked up and re-reported as fact. It's important because if the money came from winnings at a Casino, then who cares? If it came from a union slush fund it's an important matter.
Laura Tingle, the Australian Financial Review's political journalist was on the ABC's Insiders program today. She repeated Steve's error and every person listening, me included, was left with the impression that the money came from a casino win. I thought there must be new information, but I have since found that is not the case.
http://www.abc.net.au/insiders/content/2012/s3640339.htm Laura's comment is about 1.20 in to the video.
News Limited produces journals of record, relied on by future historians. It should correct this important error.
