Skye dropped me a note today - apparently Mike reckons Julia is really tough! And she's great fun to go out with because she always fights. Unreal.

This note was actually emailed on Friday afternoon - it's from [email protected]

Dear Michael,

I've been part of Labor for more than 17 years now, and yesterday was tough.

Then late this afternoon my phone here at work rang. It was Mike, someone I’ve never met and probably never will. Mike's a regular guy who kindly took the time to call and say:

“I just wanted to tell you I think how Julia has handled the last few days has been bloody wonderful. She’s tough as nails and you should all keep up the fight because I don’t know what we’ll do if Abbott gets in. He doesn't care about us, but I reckon Julia is someone who you want fighting for you.”

Mike is right of course. And he reminded me of all the other people who I’ve been lucky enough to hear from in my job: a disabled young man who has real hope for the future because of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, which became law yesterday. A mother whose baby was taken away in 1968, who yesterday finally got the overdue apology she deserved. The teenager who got the mental health support he needed during his final year of school, after his dad died unexpectedly and the pressures of exams became too much.

And I feel grateful to them all. They are the reason my team and I will commit our time, energy and passion to this campaign. It's important to remember why we're here and who we're fighting for.

Because the most important fight we face lies ahead. That's the fight to protect our country, our citizens and all that we've achieved, from Tony Abbott and his agenda.

Let's stick together and fight for what really matters.
