Cesar Melhem's Industry 2020 slush fund

Thanks to reader Sven for this FY 2008/09 financial statement from Industry 2020 Ltd.

In April 2008 Kevin Rudd held his 2020 conference in Canberra, featuring 1,000 of Australia's best, brightest and most indulged.  Paul Howes, the National Secretary of the AWU was one of the participants.

Cesar Melhem's slush fund was set up 2 months later - Industry 2020.  The AWU and Cesar Melhem kept it fairly secret until December, 2012.

It's a public company limited by guarantee - that means it has members not shareholders and the liability of the company on windup is limited to a contribution by the members, in this case up to $10.

I thought this statement of principal activities said it all - it could easily have been a lift from the AWU WRA!

Industry 2020 aims

It called itself a not for profit organisation, but it was required to pay income tax.  What possible advantage could a political party (Labor) or the AWU a registered trade union find in being associated with a "fundraising" entity in which any surplus retained was liable to income tax?
