Perhaps it mightn't rankle so much if the Federal Government had a modicum of credibility or value to add in any sort of service delivery.   If it was so far ahead of the game on its fundamental responsibilities in defence, border control, the economy, immigration and a way out of its fiscal decline.   We could probably cop the need for intervention if the states were all basket cases, teetering on the verge of bankruptcy, with an urgent need for a big-brother administrator to step in and tidy up the basket cases.   But it's the reverse - with the Federal Government the tragic case desperately in need of the receivers.

It's unconscionable.   All of the noise, angst, drama, fights and time and effort in understanding what's really at the core of this business - that is photo opportunities for a dismal, disgraceful, lame-duck PM.
