Melbourne Magistrates' Court today re Craig Thomson

Reader BillT will be at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court today for this matter.

Thomson 22 october

The same Magistrate was yesterday dealing with the Victorian parliamentarian Geoff Shaw.   Here's The Age's report.

Defence barrister Robert Richter, QC, told magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg on Monday that Mr Shaw wanted to have the charges dealt with by summary jurisdiction and this was not opposed by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr Richter said there was a small amount of money allegedly involved and it was not a complex case.

Mr Rozencwajg then asked Mr Richter: "What, no weddings?"

The magistrate jokingly suggested that if this [politicians being charged] continued, the court would have to create a special list for politicians.

Mr Richter said most politicians were not being charged.

Federal politicians have repaid taxpayers more than $20,000 in the three weeks since Fairfax Media first revealed two of Prime Minister Tony Abbott's most high-profile ministers had claimed thousands of dollars of entitlements for attending the wedding of Sydney shock jock Michael Smith.

Attorney-General George Brandis and deputy Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce have since repaid the claimed money. However, the story sparked revelations of more questionable claims with Mr Abbott himself repaying money claimed for attending the weddings of former colleagues Sophie Mirabella and Peter Slipper.

In Mr Shaw's case, Mr Richter told the court his client would be vigorously defending the charges against him.

"What you're saying is there is no room for resolution of the matter?" Mr Rozencwajg asked Mr Richter. "No, your honour," Mr Richter replied.
