Andrew O'Keefe's passionate defence of Islamists in response to Jason Morrison's column

Andrew O'Keefe has quite a soft spot for Islamists.   Here he is on the Sunrise show with the Daily Telegraph's Rita Panahi a couple of days ago.

That exchange was reported fairly widely:

Sunrise’s Andrew O’Keefe and columnist Rita Panahi go head-to-head over Islamic extremists debate

Now he's had a go at Jason Morrison for his column in today's Daily Telegraph.

Here's his email:

Dear Jason

You have completely misrepresented what I said in the debate on Sunrise. My whole point was this:  YES, we all need to discuss openly the problems that extremist Islamism presents to our liberal, democratic, humanistsic way of life, BUT it is wrong to assume that we're not discussing this already.

In the wake of the ISIS onslaught in Syria and Iraq, in the midst of the Lindt siege in Martin Place, in the shadows of the Charlie Hebdo murders, countless prominent and less prominent Muslims in Australia and abroad have publicly decried such acts as crimes against Islam and against humanity.Kuranda Seyit (of the Islamic Council of Victoria), Dr Jamal Rifi (the much-honoured and tireless Western Sydney community leader), Samier Dandan (of the Lebanese Muslim Association), Keysar Trad (of the Islamic Friendship Association), Mariam Veiszadeh (lawyer and founder of the Islamophobia Register), and Professor Ibrahim Abu Mohammed (Grand Mufti of Australia) are just some of Australia’s Muslim leaders to have spoken out strongly against extremism.

And there are numerous collaborative grassroots efforts underway in Muslim communities across the country to prevent radicalisation. One programme is run by the Australian Multicultural Foundation.Another by Australian Muslim Youth. But there are plenty of others, check 'em out. - Andrew O'Keefe

O'Keefe compared the reaction by some Cambodian monks against Islamists in their country to the atrocities in France.  There's one consistent thread in both - Islamism.   As the Israelis say, if the Islamists stop fighting the fighting will cease to be - if we stop fighting, we will cease to be.

Making excuses for Islamists is foolhardy.
