More discussion on Alan Jones coming to Queensland next week
Thursday, 15 January 2015
A few days ago I wrote in support of Fairfax Media's decision to broadcast the Alan Jones breakfast show into Brisbane via 4BC for a fortnight starting next Monday.
Since then I've published about 100 comments from you and have been in email correspondence with many of our readers.
When you get it wrong I think you should say so. I think I was hasty, having now read quotes directly from Alan Jones I think I got this one wrong.
One reader in particular has helped me to develop my own thoughts on this matter, here's Mick:
Michael, we have been told by the Courier Mail today that Jones is entering the election debate as from Monday. He is quoted by the CM as saying he is riding to the help of hapless Queenslanders who have been duped by a bully. Newman is alledged to have bullied the bikies, the judiciary, coal seam gas miners, and a hundred other stories.
I have lived here for 67 years. I have not seen one act of bullying by Campbell. I have seen a thousand by Union thugs. I own my own business and have 30 employees. I know Union thugs. Why doesn’t Jones bring up that thuggery. Campbell has cleaned up a lot of the bikie thuggery. Why doesn’t Jones acknowledge that. Jones is shitty because Newman is pro development on the coal seam gas issue. That is his bone of contention. Jones may be a “know all “ but he ought to shut his big mouth and stay south of the border.
Mick's right on union and outlaw motorcycle gang thuggery and Alan would do well to concentrate his considerable influence on those issues. What he's had to say about Campbell is outrageous and I can't support it, things like this, “Not a word this man (Mr Newman) says can be believed,” Jones said, “The man is a bully.”
I think Campbell Newman has not brought the bulk of the people of Queensland along with him, I think his political skills are sub-par but I don't see him in the same light as Jones - and heaven help us if the Labor/Greens complex get their hands on the reins again.
Thanks Mick.
Here's the Courier Mail with Jones describing his singular focus on Campbell Newman thus:
THE biggest name in Australian radio, controversial broadcaster Alan Jones will be throwing bombs at Campbell Newman when his election special starts on Monday.
Mr Jones, who will host a one hour election special on 4BC, has promised to take aim at Premier Campbell Newman during his show, labelling the state leader “a bully and a liar”.
Already using his airtime on Sydney’s 2GB to attack Mr Newman on occasion, the radio talk show host cut his holidays short to take part in the show.
Mr Jones said he would take aim at the Premier, particularly over proposed open-cut mining near his old home of Acland, judicial appointments, coal-seam gas and “a thousand other stories”.
“I will be saying things about the Government that haven’t been said before and they won’t be flattering,” he said.
Mr Newman’s office last night hit back, with a spokesman for the Premier saying his conspiracy theories were “nothing new, patently absurd and frankly more than a little sad’’.
“Mr Jones is motivated solely by a desperate need to publicise his Sydney-based radio show,’’ he said.
“Queensland listeners would be better served by a local broadcaster who is not ill-mannered, ill-informed and wrong.’’
Mr Jones even took aim at the Premier over the timing of the election being called.
“Queenslanders have had a terrible year with drought, they’re trying to have a bit of a break then he says get back from your holidays because I want you to vote and vote for me,” he said.
“It’s just monstrous.
“My information is Newman was about to lose the leadership and I will be making that point.”
