Here with us today is the AWU National Secretary Bill Shorten and Queensland Branch Senior Industrial Advocate Yvette D'Ath. These people are both running as federal Labor candidates this year and both will be strong representatives of workers interests in Canberra.

Here's Impressive Yvette at work.

It's not like the Attorney General's portfolio is important or demanding is it?

What did D’Ath know about Craig Thomson?

Labor candidate for Redcliffe, Yvette D’Ath needs to explain her role in clearing disgraced ex-union boss Craig Thomson of any wrongdoing when she was chair of the Federal Privileges and Members Interests Committee in 2012.

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said the voters of Redcliffe were entitled to ask Ms D’Ath about her record as a protector of union mates, rather than a protector of justice.

“In 2012, the Federal Coalition quite rightly referred Labor MP Craig Thomson to the Committee for allegedly misleading Parliament during his response to Fair Work Australia findings that he had misused union funds for escort services, lavish meals and shopping sprees,” Mr Seeney said.

“Incredibly, Ms D’Ath’s Labor-dominated committee cleared Mr Thomson over allegations of misleading parliament and failing to declare details of his finances on the pecuniary interests register."

In a statement to the House of Representatives in August 2012, reported in the Sydney Morning Herald, Ms D'Ath said there ''were no grounds for further investigation'' into Mr Thomson. (House of Representatives, Official Hansard No. 12, 2012, Monday, 20 August 2012, pg 9117-9118).

“I wonder how Ms D’Ath is feeling about that travesty following yesterday’s Victorian court ruling that the former union official had committed at least 36 theft and dishonesty offences while leading the Health Services Union," Mr Seeney said.

“Ms D’Ath needs to come clean and explain what she knew and why she protected the disgraced Labor MP Craig Thomson.

“The people of Redcliffe deserve to hear from Ms D’Ath about what she knew before the by-election on Saturday.

“Ms D’Ath is a former union lawyer for the Australian Workers Union, and it’s clear she already has a track record of protecting Labor union mates.

“In light of the court ruling yesterday, Ms D’Ath needs to say whether she supports a Royal Commission into union corruption.”
