Tony Abbott says it’s not just Bill Shorten “in trouble” over sweetheart deals made when he was head of the Australian Workers Union’s Victorian branch but the whole labour movement.
The Prime Minister said it looked like a “very squalid power grabbing exercise” by union officials inside the Labor Party who “ripped off” workers so union bosses could benefit.
“What seems to have happened is it seems to be a pattern of conduct on the part of a number of unions, particularly Mr Shorten’s old union, the Australian Workers Union,” Mr Abbott said.
“Now I’m all in favour of arrangements between workers and managers that maximise the ability of business to get on and do jobs and succeed and employ people and pay people well.
“What I’m not in favour of is anything that is dishonest, anything which rips off workers to benefit union bosses. It seems that this particular union and perhaps many others have had a whole lot of ghost members that have been funded onto the books of the unions because of dodgy deals between management and union bosses.”
