How the campaign against Tony Abbott affected even his staunchest supporters

I know Tony Abbott - I feel much the same way as reader Martin.

Here's Martin

I, like everyone was sickened by the Turnball takeover. But I was also getting thoroughly worn out by the level of hatred and the divisions in Australian society.

I avoided talking to my neighbours because of their leftist views and Abbott hatred. I couldn't bear to look at the news sites for fear of seeing numerous new anti Abbott propaganda. It was a case of what has he said today that they are going to twist and spin until they extract another apology, from either Tony or one of his ministers.

The country could not continue in the way it was going without civil war erupting. Abbott was despised by anyone other than those like myself with conservative views.

I spoke with my neighbours at a gathering yesterday, their first words were "thank God we have got rid our our useless Prime Minister, Turnball is so much better". I think they were shocked by my fervent defence of Tony Abbott. They truly believe that all the firefighting, lifesaving, charitable things that he did were just an act and that he is an arrogant man.

The mud had well and truly stuck to Tony and nothing was going to change it. People that I thought I could trust like Morrison have betrayed me. I feel that I am and have spent far too much time and emotion on these people, and politics in general.

Perhaps we'd all be better of if we just went fishing and enjoyed what was left of our lives. I can just about tolerate Turnbull so long as he is kept in check by the conservatives. Anything has to be better than Shorten.

UPDATE

A huge response to Martin's note this morning - well over 100 comments and they're still pouring in.

Martin has a note for us in the comments below - I think he's picked up on a apt theme with this:

I liked the analogy of the injured football captain who was forced to leave the pitch due to a broken leg. Tony had been a real warrior, he had given everything for his team but he had been severely wounded by the opposition.

Here's AAP's photo of Mr Abbott leaving Canberra today.

Thank you for your service Tony, we will miss you.
