No name yet in the witness box?

The Commission resumed at 1205PM

The Commissioner referred to appearance by Counsel for Mr McAllum at 9AM and the private hearing that followed.  A private ruling was issued during that hearing - it will remain confidential.

At 1210 Ms McNaughton called her first witness - Natalie Croghan, contract manager at Mirvac for the Pad Two project.

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 9.10.55 am

Ms Croghan has described the chain of command she was a part of at Mirvac.   She was involved in managing the details of contracts, data entry etc but did not have authority to approve payments of invoices.

She worked in the head office of Mirvac in Brisbane.  Mr McAllum's work station was a metre or so away from Ms McAllum.

Ms Croghan gave evidence that she would have processed invoices for payment at the direction of her superiors including Mr McAllum for invoices including relevantly an invoice for tickets to the CFMEU's Fight Night when the invoice described works for excavation.

Ms Croghan said a large number of Mirvac employees attended the CFMEU Fight Night.

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 9.41.23 am

St. George said:

TURC Clock 48:48 - Smacka is now demonstrating how Mirvac on variations increased costs - in this instance from $32K to $67K. Why did the quote change by double?? This may or may not have been a Hanna/Cornubia invoice. Mirvac are in further deep deep do do here, the owners of Springfield Pad 2 must be glued to the screen with calculator in hand. This is going to cost Mirvac dearly, their reputation as a reliable large scale builder must be in severe doubt after this. Smacka moves on relentlessly, grouting of tiles, cost of entertainment..etc..

It would appear from Ms Croghan's evidence that several people within Mirvac knew, or should have known about the flagrant false invoicing Mirvac paid, including for the provision of benefits enjoyed by Mirvac employees such as attendance at the CFMEU Fight Night/rock-excavation.

St. George said:
TURC clock 28:01 - Ms Croghan is getting coralled by Smacka re the 15 fight night tickets. "Why did you recode the invoice to a variation"..... MS Croghan "because I was told to". Smaka - did you know that was incorrect? MS Croghan - I don't recall. Lots of I don't recalls coming from Ms Croghan now. Smacka is right on to her. Ms Croghan's creditability and confidence is falling like the proverbial brick. Ms McNaughton is now implicating all the other Mirvac aprerachicks. The cost of tickets for the fight nite were re-coded in Mirvac's financial system as "removing a rock" on the pad 2 site. This is getting worse for Mirvac by the minute. Don't you just love Smacka's work - in reply to a "I don't recall" from Ms Croghan, Smacks just states can you please refer to vol 1 page 555.... and on it goes.

Damning evidence from the person who saw and managed each of the apparently dodgy invoices.

St. George said:

TURC Clock 59:58 - Ms McNaughton now askes about a "Melbourne Cup markee". Bloody hell - does Mirvac have any costs at all in projects. They appear to turn every expense into a variation, then double the original cost in the variation to the client. Break for lunch. This is really startling evidence on how construction (especially big projects) works in Australia. If Mirvac do this, you can bet that the rest of them do as well. If I was an owner of any project, I would be pulling the files right now and going through bills with a fine tooth comb. Variations in particular. Can you'all imagine the amount of graft attached to these jobs. Mirvac even has the hide to add their "commission" to a variation, and the commission amount is 50 bloody percent!!!!!!!!! There is an old saying "pigs get fat - hogs get slaughtered". Lets hope Mirvac get slaughtered here.

At 1.05PM the Commission adjourned for lunch - returning at 2.05PM

AT 2.05PM the Commission resumed - Ms Croghan in the witness box.

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 11.11.54 am

Ms McNaughton pressed Ms Croghan on the identity of the person who signed the authority for Mirvac to pay on "contract variations" such as those which related to the CFMEU Fight Night or the Hanna House that Mirvac Built.

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 11.12.08 am

Mr Shuttlewood has a long career in the building industry.   He knows Mr McAllum from Mirvac well, they've worked on jobs together.  He's now out in a business on his own.

2.50PM MY POSTING AND COMMENT PROBLEMS CONTINUE - WORKING HARD TO GET IT FIXED

The next witness

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 12.05.28 pm

This afternoon's CFMEU hearing report has been hit with technical problems - I'll do my best to flesh it out later today.

Tony Abbott's speech to mark the end of his term as Prime Minister

This is a magnificent dignified speech from a generous and principled man.

He thanked the Armed Forces for their service.

He had large group of staff to thank - and singled out Peta Credlin.

Very moving from a man who didn't deserve to be dumped.

PS - a very important PS, read below.   Tony Abbott deserved so much better than this.

Keysar Trad and the Islamic Friendship Association stick the boot into Tony Abbott

Keysar Trad is not a leader - he's a disgrace.

Islamic leaders are the worlds leading practitioners in causing social division. They see the world in terms of Muslims (superior) and Kuffars like us (convert or die).

They have some cheek saying it was Tony Abbott (not themselves) who caused social division related to Muslims in Australia.

They say the "politics of blame" under Tony Abbott need to be fixed by Turnbull. "The politics of blame?"   Muslims are the freakin' masters on that score - The Islamist ethos is all about blaming the other guys and chopping their heads off.

They don't see the irony either in Trad being the blamer here in blaming Tony Abbott for the "politics of blame" and social divisions caused by Muslims and their actions.

Muslim leaders are hopeful the nation can move on from the divisions they believe were nurtured in the last months of the Abbott government.

15 SEP 2015 - 10:30 AM  UPDATED 1 HOUR AGO
Muslim leaders have called on Malcolm Turnbull to bring an end to the politics of blame they believe impacted their communities under the prime ministership of Tony Abbott.

Keysar Trad, spokesman for the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia, says he is hopeful Mr Turnbull will serve the interests of all Australians.

"Certainly the last period of the Abbott government saw more brazen attitudes from groups like Reclaim Australia and attacks on Islam, the Senate inquiry into halal certification; all these things that were very, very divisive in Australian society and seemed to find their nurturing grounds in the last few months of the Abbott government," Mr Trad told AAP.

Disgraceful. The Age marks Prime Minister Abbott's service with a quiz "How well do you know your Tony Abbott gaffes"

Australia has just had its head of government rolled in the middle of the night,.  Again.

It was brutal.   Overseas, people are shocked.   Our reputation has been dented by this nonsense.

Whether you agree with Mr Turnbull's actions or not, we should all agree that on this of all days Tony Abbott deserves to leave office with dignity.

Today of all days.

TURC CFMEU corruption hearing in Brisbane - underway at the earlier hour of 9.30

The examination of Mr Greenland continues

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 6.56.19 am

Mr Greenland, with jacket on today, had all last night to think about whether it's worth the risk to try to protect his client Mirvac et al.

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 6.56.32 am

The Commissioner appeared to be watching, listening to and carefully considering Greenland's credibility.  I would imagine he's less than 100% sure he's heard the whole truth.

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 6.56.38 am

A little before 10AM Mr Greenland was allowed to leave the witness box.

The next witness is Lucas Nicoll.

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 7.11.02 am

Mr Nicoll is the managing director of Nicoll Industries - a plumbing business.

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 7.12.43 am

Electrical, interior design, tiles etc were ticked off yesterday -  looks like we're going to hear from all the trades as the Commission acquaints itself with  the process of building Dave Hanna's "Normie Gallagher" memorial spread.

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 7.05.53 am

Mr Nicoll said he had known Mr McAllum from Mirvac for quite a while - dating back to  Mr McAllum's cadetship with Mirvac.

Mr Nicoll's been handed a large folder of documents he'll be examined about.

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 7.05.42 am

Mr Nicoll said he had known Mr McAllum from Mirvac for quite a while - dating back to Mr McAllum's cadetship with Mirvac.

He was contracted by Mirvac on the Pad Two job.

Now familiar story - suspect paperwork and invoices seeking payment for works purportedly done at Pad Two, but in fact carried out at the Hanna home.

Mr Nicoll gave evidence that he would not have been awarded major contracts with Mirvac unless he had a union EBA.

WE HAVE TO APOLOGISE - COMMENTS NOT GETTING THROUGH - WORKING ON THE ISSUE

AT 11.15  Ms McNaughton completed her examination.

AT 11.15 THE COMMISSION ADJOURNED

AT 11.35 THE COMMISSION RESUMED

The next witness is Colin Considine who works at Nicoll Industries

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 8.36.21 am

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 8.37.07 am

Mr Considine confirmed Mr Nicoll's evidence and spoke about work he did at the Hanna house in Cornubia.

At about 1150 Mr Considine was excused.

The next witness is Ben Carter

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 8.49.58 am

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 8.50.07 am

At 12.50 Mr Carter was allowed to leave the witness box.

The next witness is Steve Gray who with his brother runs and air-conditioning business

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 9.50.08 am

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 9.50.19 am

At 1PM Mr Elliot completed his examination of Mr Gray.

AT 1PM THE COMMISSION ADJOURED

We are having all sorts of drama with getting comments up and running at present - so I'm providing just a skeletal coverage of today's TURC proceedings while we're working on a fix for the technical glitch.

Congratulations Tony Abbott - your tributes here please

The shock of yesterday's leadership spill is still there the morning after.

I was doing a daily 3 hours talkback show on 4BC in the months leading up to the last Liberal Party leadership change - Abbott v Turnbull in 2009.

Tony Abbott was elected leader because of his opposition to trendy issues - climate change in particular.

Australia owes a huge debt of gratitude to Tony.   Our borders are now secure, we have no crazy carbon tax and union corruption is starting to be exposed in the royal commission.

I'm still in shock over the news yesterday and I'll have something to say about our new PM when that shock's worn off a bit.

So today I'd like to recognise Tony Abbott's courage, strength, intellect and wholehearted love for  his county.

Congratulations Tony Abbott.   Australia is a much better place because of you.

Thank you for your service.
