Iranian suspected of spying a director of Islamic centre

Gay-hate preacher Farrokh Sekaleshfar in Sydney.

An Iranian sheik deported from Australia amid claims of being a spy for the ­Islamic republic remains a director of a Sydney ­religious centre that hosted gay-hate preacher Farrokh Sekaleshfar, who was forced out of Australia earlier this month. 

Sheik Mansour Leghaei, who founded the Imam Husain Islamic Centre in Sydney’s southwest, was sent packing by the Australian government in 2010 for “acts of ­interference”.

He was listed as a ­director of the centre while in exile in the Middle East in May last year, ­according to documents lodged with the corporate regulator.

The Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation recorded several adverse security assessments against Sheik Mansour, some of which apparently stem from a 1995 airport search in which he was found entering Australia with $10,000 in cash as a “donation” from Iran to an Islamic centre in Melbourne.

During the same search, officers at Sydney airport also took copies of a notebook in which Sheik Mansour quoted scholars on the subject of jihad that, ­according to an ASIO translation Sheik Mansour disputes, spoke of the need for Muslims to kill “enemies of Islam”.

The Iranian regime, which was at the centre of Foreign Minister Julie Bishop’s diplomatic pivot during the last term of Coalition government, punishes homosexuality by imprisonment and execution.

In the wake of the Orlando gay nightclub massacre, in which 49 people were killed by homo­phobic terrorist Omar Mateen, it was revealed the Sydney centre was hosting gay-hate preacher Dr Sekaleshfar, who also toured Florida in March.

In a 2013 lecture, Dr Sekaleshfar said “death is the punishment for homosexual acts. We (Muslims) have to have that compassion for people. With homosexuals, it’s the same. Out of compassion, let’s get rid of them now.”

The Imam Husain Islamic Centre is registered as a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission and enjoys tax-free status, though it has not reported financial records since 2014. That year it reported no revenue from government grants but received $310,000 in “donations and bequests”.

The centre represents minority Shia Muslims who are routinely persecuted by dominant, hardline Sunni adherents.

The Australian yesterday asked the centre how it was ­funded and whether any money was provided from Iran or by the Iranian government.

A spokesman said: “As it is short notice and in the midst of the month of Ramadan, where we have several commitments, we are unable to respond in time for your story.”

Islam’s modern battle with “sins” such as homosexuality was thrust into the spotlight when Malcolm Turnbull hosted the first Ramadan iftar (fast-breaking) dinner at Kirribilli House alongside Australian National Imams Council president Shady Alsuleiman, who also has preached anti-women and anti-gay views.

The Australian has revealed at least two other members of the executive believe sex outside ­marriage, including homosex­uality, is punishable by death under sharia.

While other mainstream religions rule out homosexuality as a sin, systematic application of ­Islamic law means gay people are put to death by at least 10 Islamic countries, including Iran.

Sheik Mansour told Fairfax Media in 2010 his expulsion from Australia, where his three adult sons still live, was “the biggest joke of the century”.

Australian Securities & Investments Commission documents show Sheik Mansour was listed as director and secretary of the Imam Husain Islamic Centre in May last year and, although he was marooned in Iran, his address was listed as at the centre.
