Thanks to Jason Morrison and the 2UE audio archives for the audio.
I was sitting out the back at 27 Beaconsfield St Bexley with my dad and one of my mates Anthony Reilly when I first heard that news report, 40 years ago.
Thanks to Brenden Wood for the vision of the now vintage emergency vehicles - on display today to commemorate the heroism of so many workers on a day that defied belief.
83 people were killed. Emergency workers confronted scenes more akin to a war zone than pre-influx Sydney.
To all those people affected by the disaster, we remember you today.
And to the myriad workers who were part of dealing with the aftermath - thank you for your service.
