LNP member gets one-year ban for criticising Malcolm Turnbull’s leadership

A HIGH-PROFILE LNP member has been suspended by the party for 12 months for criticising Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

The Courier-Mail understands David Goodwin, a former senate candidate and former president of the Young Nationals and the Young LNP, was suspended over his private account Facebook post calling for Mr Turnbull to be dumped for Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce.

The suspension follows comments by former premier Campbell Newman last week doubling down on his frequent criticism of Mr Turnbull’s leadership. Mr Newman has said he received support from within the party for his comments.

Mr Goodwin, however, has been sidelined for a year.

The LNP declined to comment as it was an “internal party matter”.

It is understood offence was taken at the wording used by Mr Goodwin to describe Mr Turnbull.

In the Facebook post — written about March 12 — he shared a link to a story on the Turnbull Government’s “no jab, no play” vaccination policy and described it as the “final overreach by a hopeless PM”.

“He will not be PM after the next election even if he is when it is called,” Mr Goodwin wrote of Mr Turnbull in the post.

“Shorten is one of the dumbest politicians ever but Turnbull is proving dumber. It is time to seriously consider switching the leader of the LNP to Barnaby Joyce as the only way to stop the current idiot and avoid the inevitable ALP/Green consequence of having put him there.”

Mr Goodwin would not comment on the suspension.

It is understood the post was not on his private page for longer than a day before he deleted it.

The LNP’s executive met in May to suspend him formally.

He was previously served a three-month suspension after doing an interview on the Federal Coalition’s dumping of former PM Tony Abbott for Mr Turnbull in 2015.
