MALCOLM Turnbull will be facing a major electoral battle across several key fronts in 2018 with support for the federal government collapsing across the nation’s five capital cities.

Support for the Coalition has also dropped across all age groups in Australia, and particularly in the party’s key base of voters aged 50 and over, a demographic analysis of Newspolls taken since the 2016 election shows.

The major challenges revealed in the analysis published in The Australiantoday will be the need to win back support in the Prime Minister’s home state of New South Wales, where the primary vote has dropped almost 7 percentage points since the last election.
Queensland will be another key battleground where support has dropped 11.2 points and hit a low of 32 per cent for the first time.

Currently, the analysis shows a 4 per cent swing to Labor nationally, with the party leading 55-45 in Queensland, 54-46 in NSW and Victoria and 53-47 in both South Australia and Western Australia on a two-party-preferred basis.

It could mean a loss of between 20 and 30 seats for the Liberal and Nationals parties if repeated at the next election, The Australian reports.

Malcolm Turnbull will face a personal battle to win back voters’ support, with an increasing number of voters saying they are dissatisfied with his performance.
Support for the Coalition among voters aged 50 and older, the party’s key base, has plunged 9.9 points since the election to 40 per cent.

It has also dropped 6.5 points among voters aged 35 to 49 to 32 per cent, and 1.2 points among voters aged 18 to 34 to 31 per cent.

The number of voters abandoning the major parties also continues to rise, with 27 per cent of voters in the five capital cities saying they would vote for the Greens, One Nation or another minor party, up from 22.1 per cent at the last election.

In the regions, support for the minor parties has jumped from 25 per cent to 29 per cent over the period.

Malcolm Turnbull will also face a personal battle to win back voters’ support, with an increasing number of voters saying they are dissatisfied with his performance.

In the capital cities, 56 per cent of voters in the capital cities say they are dissatisfied with his performance, a two point rise over the period.

Malcolm Turnbull continues to hold his lead over Opposition leader Bill Shorten as preferred Prime Minister, although the gap has narrowed.

In the regions, the number has jumped four points to 60 per cent of voters.

Among voters aged 50 and older, just over a quarter of voters (26 per cent) say they are satisfied with Mr Turnbull’s time in the top job, a drop of five points over the period.

Younger voters aged 18 to 34 have marked the PM up however, with a 2 point rise in the number of voters satisfied with his performance to 39 per cent.

Mr Turnbull continues to hold his lead over Opposition leader Bill Shorten as preferred Prime Minister, although the gap has narrowed to 40-33 per cent from 44-32 per cent.

Voters have slightly marked Mr Shorten’s performance up, with the number of voters saying they are satisfied with his performance rising 1 point over the period to 33 per cent in the December quarter.

Aviation outrage over Chinese ownership of Merredin airport

Merredin airport in Western Australia is effectively under the control of a Chinese government enterprise, prompting outrage in aviation circles, as safety concerns shut down its pilot training school.

The airport’s runways, control tower, hangars and all of its assets are 50 per cent owned, and may soon be fully owned, by China’s biggest airline, state-owned China Southern Airlines.

In 1993, the secretive company quietly paid $1 to the WA government to lease the airport for 100 years to use as a base to train thousands of Chinese pilots for employment in the world’s fastest- growing aviation market.

In recent years it has owned the flight school with Canadian company CAE. So far, more than 2000 pilots have graduated from the ­facility, making it China Southern Airlines’ biggest training base in the world.

For an Australian town’s sole airstrip to be effectively controlled by the Chinese government is unusual.

Anyone who wishes to land at the aerodrome, 260km east of Perth, must seek approval from the flying school. Locals say permission has never been denied, but aviation veteran and businessman Dick Smith believes the airport should not be owned by a foreign company or government.

“It is outrageous that an Aussie pilot can’t go to a country airport without getting approval from the Chinese to land there,” he said.

“I’ve never heard of this happening anywhere.” In recent months, however, the Chinese flying school has suspended its operations in WA after the Civil Aviation Safety Authority raised safety concerns.

Aviation industry sources say the company has continued to pay millions of dollars in wages — without any students — since March this year.

One source said he believed a dispute between Guangzhou-based China Southern Airlines and CAE could lead to China Southern taking full ownership of the flying school within months.

A spokesman for China Southern West Australian Flying College declined to comment.
Merredin shire president Ken Hooper said nobody in town had been able to find out when the flying school would reopen.

“It’s quite important for our economy here but we just can’t get any information,” he said.

A CASA spokesman said the regulator would not publicly discuss details of its dealings with aviation organisations unless serious action was taken, such as suspending or cancelling a certificate.

“CASA and China Southern have been working to address identified safety and regulatory issues over a period of time,” the spokesman said. “CASA is hopeful that China Southern can meet all requirements as soon as possible.”

There is broader concern in the aviation industry about growing foreign ownership and control of pilot training schools in Australia.

With a looming shortage of commercial pilots predicted, there are fears Australia will have to import pilots while foreign-controlled pilot schools in this country send their graduates to China and elsewhere in Asia.

At the same time, flight schools claim they are being crippled by skyrocketing costs and over-regulation.

This is how emboldened and brazen they have become - gutless attack on a cop arresting another one for shoplifting.

But Quetta is no sanctuary. This year there has been an alarming increase in the rate and severity of attacks on Hazaras in Pakistan. In eight attacks, 216 Hazaras have been killed and more than 300 injured."

This is one of a series of articles dealing with issues which we have confronted in cases where this firm has acted.

In the course of our immigration law practice we acted for a father from Afghanistan who claimed refugee status in Australia because he faced persecution from the Taliban. Our client had lived in Pakistan most of his life and would have been unable to travel back to Afghanistan safely.

Members of our client’s family had been detained by the Taliban. He has been persecuted as a Shi’a Muslim and Hazara.

Taking detailed instructions from our client and compiling relevant research we managed to demonstrate that Hazaras who return to Afghanistan are at risk of persecution by the Taliban.

The Taliban target Hazaras on the roads leading to and from Jaghori, Ghazni district. The Taliban will target Hazaras whether they have been involved in political activities or not and will believe they are opposed to the Taliban purely because they are Hazara.

We also managed to convince the reviewer that Afghanistan will become increasingly unstable for Hazaras and Shi’a Muslims following the troop withdrawal in 2014 and the Taliban will continue to commit atrocities when this occurs.

The reviewer accepted that our client would be unable to relocate his family to Afghanistan due to fear from the Taliban because they are Hazara. Further, our client did not have the resources, connections or skills to re-establish himself in Afghanistan which contributed to the finding that he is a refugee.

His status as a Hazara Shi’a in Afghanistan made him a target for groups like the Taliban.

Our client’s refugee claim was accepted and he was granted a protection visa. He is one of many Shi’a Hazaras from Afghanistan who our firm has represented successfully.

So it was safer for the Hazaras to have the Western troops on the ground.

It is Muslim tribal warfare in the Middle East and Afghanistan and some African countries that is the cause of citizens being displaced in these nations. Western nations and now Russia and Iran have to come in and clean up the mess and put order into these Muslim countries.

As for those displaced persons in Vietnam, they were being persecuted and killed by the communists. To survive, they had to flee their own country. It was an internal war based on political ideology and not religious ideology.

You forgot about the displaced persons from Cambodia. Again this was not caused by an invasion by Western troops but by the political ideology of its leaders, especially Pol Pot with his agrarian communism.

It appears that the main cause for displaced persons is internal politics or religious politics. The invasions come after to solve the situation and bring peace back to the nation so the citizens don't have to flee.

Suggest you compare the displacement figures before and after the Soviet invasion, after the Taliban takeover, and since 2003 invasion.
You will note three surges, the first and last stimulated by foreign invaders, and the second by a local (Talib) reaction to the first.

What business is it of "Western Countries", and Russia to "clean up the mess and put order" in any country external to their borders?
The invasion of Iraq in 2003 was not designed to "clean up any mess". It was a response to American pride being hurt by 9/11, even though there was no link between Al Quaida and Saddam Hussein. The concoction
