Justin Trudeau criticised on India visit

  • The Times

Justin Trudeau’s ill-fated trip to India has stumbled from bad to worse. The Canadian Prime Minister has been accused of fraternising with terrorists after his wife was photographed with a man convicted of shooting an Indian minister.

Mr Trudeau has been snubbed by Narendra Modi, India’s Prime Minister, who almost a week after the Canadian’s arrival has still yet to meet his counterpart.

Mr Trudeau has also been mocked for the extravagant wardrobe of traditional Indian clothes that he and his family have brought with them.

The Canadian delegation is scrambling to limit the fallout from the latest debacle, when Indian hardliners were outraged by pictures of Sophie Trudeau alongside Jaspal Atwal, a notorious activist, at a function in Mumbai.

Mr Atwal, a Sikh separatist with Canadian citizenship, was convicted of the attempted murder of an Indian cabinet minister in 1986. He was part of a gang that opened fire on a car carrying Malkiat Singh Sidhu, who was visiting family in Vancouver, against the background of a violent campaign for Khalistan, an independent Sikh state, to be carved out of Punjab in northwest India. India has long complained that Canada shelters Khalistani separatists.

An invitation for Mr Atwal to attend a reception for the Trudeaus at the Canadian high commission in Delhi was hastily rescinded, but the damage had been done. Sections of the local press and hardliners on social media denounced Mr Trudeau as being soft on terrorism.

“The Canadians say that they do not support pro-Khalistan groups, so how did they allow him?” asked Subramanian Swamy, an MP with Mr Modi’s ruling party.

The gaffe has compounded the sense of unease surrounding the trip, which has been compared to the Queen’s visit in 1997 when the royal party travelled to Pakistan first and the Duke of Edinburgh was reported to have dismissed Indian estimates of the death toll at the 1919 Amritsar massacre as “exaggerated”.

Mr Trudeau has been criticised for the lavish wardrobe of traditional Indian clothes he and his family have worn.

The Prime Minister dressed more extravagantly than Bollywood A-listers at a function in Mumbai and wore a turban during a visit to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, prompting critics to say that he should spend more time on foreign policy and less on fancy dress.

Mr Trudeau has previously boasted that he has more Sikh ministers than Mr Modi and much of his trip has appeared designed to court the votes of Canada’s Sikh community rather than rebuild bridges with Delhi.

Mr Modi is also alert to his domestic audience. After negotiations before Mr Trudeau’s arrival last Friday failed to secure a statement backing Indian unity, by implication withdrawing support for Khalistan, a junior minister was sent to meet the Canadians at the airport.

Mr Trudeau will meet Mr Modi at last today, with all eyes on the joint communique and body language between the two men. Mr Modi is renowned for the bear hugs he gives to favoured foreign leaders. Anything less than a warm embrace for Mr Trudeau will cement the impression of a relationship in trouble.

“This trip has gone from bad to worse so all eyes will be on the joint statement and the meeting between the two men,” Shivam Vij, a local journalist and commentator, said. “Both sides are playing to their domestic audience. Trudeau’s wardrobe is intended to show the Indian community in Canada that he is celebrating Indian culture, but here it has looked a bit ridiculous.”

UPDATE

Here's Tessa Akerman in The Australian moments ago.

Victorian ‘troll cop’ stood aside over online comments

A Victoria Police assistant commissioner has been stood aside from his role as the head of Professional Standards over a series of “crude” online comments.

Assistant Commissioner Brett Guerin has been referred to the state’s anti-corruption commission, IBAC, over the posts which criticised former chief commissioner Kel Glare and referred in vulgar terms to a Supreme Court case between former Police Association boss Paul Mullett and former chief commissioner Christine Nixon.

Police spokeswoman Natalie Webster said chief commissioner Graham Ashton had referred the allegations against Mr Guerin to the independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission.

“Whilst the matter is being assessed, the Chief Commissioner has directed AC Guerin to step aside from his role as the Assistant Commissioner for Professional Standards and take leave,” she said.

Using an online profile of “Vernon Demerest” Mr Guerin posted on the website of Sydney shock jock Mike Smith according to The Age.

“She (Ms Nixon) bent the Mulletmeister over and slipped a rather large schlong up his date courtesy of the Supreme Court’s decision this morning,” he wrote in August 2016.

He later wrote Ms Nixon had “gutted” Mr Mullett and “stuffed a nice prawn up his filleted asshole”.

Mr Guerin yesterday told 3AW he was embarrassed about his posts.

“This has burnt me,” he said.

“This has been a big learning experience for me. Which is what we want our members to do, we want our members if they make mistakes to own up and make amends so they get better.”

Smith wrote to Mr Guerin in 2016 to complain about management of correspondence regarding the AWU with top cop Graham Ashton, according to a post on Smith’s website this week.

Smith claims Mr Guerin posted a comment as Demerest in response to Smith’s online publishing of the issue.

“Given this whole thing is a politically-driven stunt, I can see why the police would want to put investigating things like rapes, assaults, robberies and other serious crimes which actually impact on real people on a higher level than crap such as this,” the comment read.

The Age reported Mr Guerin last year asked state opposition leader Matthew Guy to name a repeat murderer who did not serve jail time under the Andrews government.

More from Dave McAlpine in The Australian today

Former WA minister linked to AWU fraud case

Retired West Australian detective David McAlpine who investigated the AWU slush fund scandal.
Retired West Australian detective David McAlpine who investigated the AWU slush fund scandal.

The detective who ran the police investigation into the AWU slush fund scandal claims the entity at the centre of the fraud was incorporated in Western Australia at the direction of a senior minister in the Labor government of Carmen Lawrence.

David McAlpine, a former West Australian major fraud squad officer, this week called for the case to be reopened, claiming his two-year investigation into the scam in the 1990s was “subverted” because of “political interference”.

Mr McAlpine, who retired from WA Police in 2016, alleges a conspiracy between former union officials and executives from construction giant Thiess that extended to Julia Gillard’s former law firm Slater & Gordon.

He said the WA Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had “abruptly” ordered him to remain in Perth as he was preparing to fly to Melbourne to execute search warrants on key players, including Ms Gillard’s then employer, Slater & Gordon.

Mr McAlpine said he had retained key documents including letters, memos and phone notes from his investigation and he was willing to swear an affidavit and give evidence in any court about his knowledge of the $400,000-plus fraud.

He says he was unaware at the time of his investigation that the then minister responsible for corporate affairs, Yvonne Henderson, had directed the Commissioner for Corporate Affairs to incorporate the entity used in the fraud.

The entity, known as the AWU Workplace Reform Association, was set up by Australian Workers Union officials Bruce Wilson and Ralph Blewitt with legal help from Ms Gillard, who was Mr Wilson’s girlfriend at the time.

Mr McAlpine said: “The Corporate Affairs Commissioner was directed to incorporate an association which he was not lawfully entitled to incorporate.

“The AWU Workplace Reform Association was a trade union entity and thus ineligible for incorporation.”

Ms Henderson, who retired from politics in 1996, could not be reached for comment yesterday. WA Police did not respond to several requests for comment.

Mr McAlpine claims former Thiess senior executives might have misled the trade union royal commission in 2014 about alleged secret commissions paid to Mr Wilson and Mr Blewitt.

Mr Wilson has admitted to extracting large sums of money from Thiess for the slush fund.

Money from the AWU Workplace Reform Association was used to partly fund the purchase of a house in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in 1993.

Royal commissioner Dyson Heydon recommended in 2015 that Mr Wilson and Mr Blewitt face prosecution for fraud-related offences connected to the fund.

Ms Gillard has repeatedly denied knowing the fund was to be used in a fraud.

The royal commission found she had been “casual and haphazard” in her work at Slater & Gordon but had not committed offences, and was not aware of Mr Wilson’s conduct. Mr Blewitt faces 31 fraud charges and is due in court in Perth next week.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Brett Guerin - internet troll on our website - must be dismissed. Today.

This is Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Brett Guerin.

Screen Shot 2018-02-22 at 8.23.20 pm

Yesterday he admitted to Neil Mitchell on 3AW that he was the author of vulgar comments in our story concerning a win a good copper, Paul Mullet had in court over Christine Nixon.

The Age reported that story yesterday.

Guerin created a fictional person for his posts - Vernon Demerest.

Vernon Demerest was Dean Martin's character in the 70s movie Airport.

Brett/Vern must think he's pretty good.

Screen Shot 2018-02-22 at 8.26.55 pm

I don't think he's any good at all.

Guerin/Vern made several posts to this site, over a 4 month period.

This was no accident.

During February and March 2016 I wrote a number of letters to Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton.

I wrote as the original complainant in what led to Operation Tendement - the AWU Scandal taskforce headed by DET SGT Ross Mitchell.

For several weeks ASHTON's office simply did not respond to my requests

I was denied progress reports on my complaint - reports which should have been made to me as a right.

I wrote to Assistant Commissioner Brett Guerin of the Ethical Standards Unit to lodge a complaint about the management of correspondence in ASHTON's office.

I've published my letter at the foot of this post - and I also made this public post about the matter.

GUERIN, using his Vernon Demerest persona posted this comment to that post.

Screen Shot 2018-02-22 at 8.44.29 pm

The "whole thing" which Assistant Commissioner Guerin refers to as "crap such as this" and a "politically-driven stunt" is the investigation of The AWU Scandal.

His own police were then in possession of considerable evidence of serious indictable offences involving named offenders in the matter.

Guerin is a member of Victoria Police Force Command.

Unspeakable.

Just like some of the other comments from his IP address.

Screen Shot 2018-02-22 at 8.46.56 pm

Assistant Commissioner Guerin/Vernon can expect a whole heapin' helpin' of heartache headed his way.

It would be in all our interests for him to leave the Victoria Police today.

And Ashton should follow him.

Dear Assistant Commissioner Guerin,

ASHTON, Graham - Chief Commissioner of Police
Complaint regarding correspondence management and customer service
__________________________________________________________

Circumstances

On 16 February I sent the following written request for feedback regarding my 2012 complaint to Victoria Police (which led to the establishment of Operation Tendement).

I included this proviso "I propose to treat this note as a public communication along with any direct response Victoria Police sends to me."   I make that declaration in relation to this note too.

As well as email transmission, I published the request to ASHTON to the internet and it was widely disseminated on Twitter and other social media platforms.

I have received no response from ASHTON's office.

Further chaser

On 14 March I sent a further follow-up note to the Victoria Police media unit, enclosing the original note to ASHTON.   I have received no response to that note.

Request

That you cause an investigation of the of the Commissioner's correspondence management, including the registration of incoming correspondence and the Commissioner's adherence to reasonable timeframes in replying to his corro.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Smith

My plans for the next couple of weeks.

I will be travelling from tomorrow until 0530 on Sunday.

Over the next week or so I plan to meet with a couple of now retired former government officials.

Like Dave McAlpine, they have plenty to say about The AWU Scandal - and they'll keep up the momentum for fresh enquiries to get to the truth.

I also have meetings with various media planned along with Australian lawyers.

Without giving the time date and place away I will file charges against GILLARD as planned.

As you can imagine expenses are mounting.

The ABC gets more than $1 BILLION every year to deliver lefty crap - but not one mention of today's story regarding Dave McAlpine and his call for a proper investigation of The AWU Scandal.

If it is to be, it's going to be up to us.

We have some momentum today - I'm determined to make sure we don't lose it.

Pampers nappy scandal - babies crapping on squiggles that look like the Arab word Muhammad!

A MUSLIM group has called for the makers of Pampers nappies to be arrested after spotting “Mohammed” spelled in the whiskers of the brand’s mascot

FEBRUARY 22, 20181:07PM

PAMPERS is facing a furry fatwa after a Muslim group claimed to have seen the word “Mohammed” spelled out in the whiskers of the nappy brand’s cartoon cat mascot.

The lines of the whiskers, nose, mouth and left eye of the smiley cat, which appears on each nappy and on the brand’s packaging, allegedly bear close resemblance to the Islamic prophet’s name when written in Arabic or Urdu.

Members of the Darsgah Jihad-o-Shahadat group lodged a formal complaint with police in the Indian city of Hyderabad on Tuesday over the alleged “insult” to Islam, as video footage emerged of activists burning packets of Pampers Baby Dry Pants in the streets.

In a formal letter to police, the group claimed that “name of Prophet (PBUH) can be seen printed” on the packet in Arabic “even with the bare eye”, adding that it had “hurt the feelings of the entire Muslim community”.

“Therefore we request your goodself to kindly immediately intervene into the matter forthwith and stop the sale and distribution of Baby Dry Pants of Pampers Company and take action against its manufactures [sic], arrest them and punish them,” the letter said.

One of the complainants, Shahnoor Khan, told Indian newspaper the Deccan Chronicle the group believed the company had “deliberately printed” the word on each nappy to “hurt the Muslim community” and spark community unrest.

According to The Sun, users on social media were split on the issue, with some joining calls for a boycott and others saying it was an innocent drawing taken out of context.

“Maybe it’s the fault of the creative team but whatever the case is, directly or indirectly, it’s manifesting the name of [our] holy Prophet,” Azam Shariff said. “That is a sheer desecration. It’s insulting. Don’t use the products until they change this, until they apologise.”

But Imtiyaz Naikoo said, “Please grow up. It’s a cat with two eyes and a moustache.”

On its website, multinational giant Procter & Gamble said Pampers had “served millions of babies since its launch in the Arabian Peninsula”.

A spokesperson for Procter & Gamble told The Sun, “We are aware of the false and misleading information about Pampers being spread via social media channels such as Facebook and YouTube.

“The design on the Pampers Baby Dry Pants shows an innocent animated representation of a cat. It shows a cat’s mouth and whiskers like it is commonly portrayed in drawings and cartoons across the world, especially by little children.

“The intent behind the use of this cartoon is completely innocent and we would never intend to offend any person, religion or cultural belief.”

Last month, Swedish fashion giant H&M was forced to apologise and pull a range of children’s socks after Muslim shoppers claimed an image of a Lego figurine resembled the word “Allah”.
