It’s been a busy few weeks and I’m pleased to say that my Parliamentary colleagues and I have been busy working to deliver good government for Australia, in line with our values. Here are some key achievements from the last fortnight: The Instant Asset Write-off to back small business has passed the Parliament. You can read my speech here. The ABS reported record jobs growth, with 44,000 new jobs in August and 100,000 young Australians getting work last year. The Government announced that it will put energy affordability and reducing power prices front and centre, a welcome development. Australia’s credit rating was upgraded to AAA stable by Standard and Poors, showing great confidence in the Government’s economic management. The Prime Minister announced that the Government has finally resolved the long-running school policy impasse – something that I have been advocating for over a year. The Government has suspended foreign aid to Union Aid Abroad until an investigation is complete about funds being channelled to Palestinian terrorists. The Government has delivered more support for our farmers struggling with drought around Australia and passed legislation to back strawberry growers who have been hurt by the sabotage of their produce. I’ve also been busy making the case for a return of the Green Army to support our environment, for the UK and Australia to have a closer trade relationship, to legalise e-cigarettes, for local councils to stick to collecting rubbish instead of talking rubbish and defending Peter Dutton against the failed Labor/Green witch hunt. I was honoured to have been elected as the Chair of the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee – an important role that I am looking forward to taking to with vim and vigour. Indeed, I have already worked to deliver a report in support of the Trans Pacific Partnership which will help to secure $15.6 billion in economic benefits for Australia which directly translates to more jobs and investment for Tasmania. I am also honoured to have been elected as the new Chair of the Australia-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group. Israel is the only free and democratic nation in the Middle East and I am looking forward to working to advance the very deep friendship between Australia and Israel.
