#vale Senior Constable James Affleck VA
Today we paused to remember the life of Senior Constable ‘Jim’ Affleck, #18315 formerly of the Campbelltown Highway Patrol.
About 8.40am on 14 January, 2001 police were attempting to stop a stolen vehicle during a high speed pursuit at Mittagong. Approval was given to place road spikes on the roadway and Senior Constable Affleck and other police did this near the Mark Evans Bridge, Glen Alpine. When the offending vehicle, travelling north, reached the spikes the driver intentionally swerved from one side of the north bound laned road to the other, hitting the senior constable, who was killed instantly. The driver was later arrested and charged with murder.
‘Jim’ , as he was known, was born in 1957 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 18 September, 1978, appointed as a probationary Constable. On the 29 August 1984 he was appointed to Constable 1st Class, and Senior Constable 29 August 1988. On the 2 January 1995 he was awarded the National Medal, and upon his death the ‘Valour Award’.
Along with the Commissioner of Police, Michael Fuller APM, Police from Campbelltown and the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command attended a short ceremony outside the Police Station this morning, where Jim’s life and police service was remembered by those present.
The Jim Affleck Bridge, on the Hume Motorway at Menangle Park stands in memory of Jim’s service and sacrifice to the community of New South Wales.
