Former Queensland Labor Party vice-president Dave Hanna has been found guilty of raping a woman he met at a Brisbane nightclub.
A former national president of the construction division of the CFMEU, Hanna has been convicted on three counts three counts of rape and one count of filming the woman’s genitalia in breach of her privacy.
Hanna, 54, a father of three, was among the most powerful Labor figures in Queensland for decades and was leader of the “Old Guard” faction — whose members included Kevin Rudd and Peter Beattie.
Hanna pleaded not guilty to all charges, saying the sexual encounter was consensual.
During the District Court trial, prosecutors said the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, sent text and Facebook messages to friends asking for help moments before she was raped in 2017.
The jury — who began deliberations yesterday — were told Hanna met the woman at a club in Fortitude Valley and took advantage of her vulnerability because she was drunk.
He is expected to be sentenced today.
