Ralph Blewitt discusses Slater and Gordon billing records on Fatality Fund and others

In June 2013 Victoria Police armed with a search warrant seized the file below from Slater and Gordon.

The single file contains account ledgers which appear to expose the firm to allegations of serious wrong-doing, particularly on Gillard's part.

This file contains billing records, client names and addresses and other details for:

  • The AWU Fatality Fund
  • A CFMEU "demarcation dispute" - with a single $600 bill dated 31 March 1993
  • The Blewitt Kerr Street conveyance
  • The Blewitt Kerr Street mortgage
  • Pre-August 1991 rule changes - with a single $500 bill dated 16 July 1993
  • The AWU Bush Workers Welfare Committee
  • An extract from the Slater and Gordon billing system - showing 3 separate files for the Blewitt conveyance/mortgage (Slater and Gordon told Blewitt and his lawyer there were only ever two files)

I'll post separate articles analysing these ledgers in a great deal more detail, particularly the Fatality Fund.  I've commissioned an expert witness to analyse the Fatality Fund transactions and he's prepared a forensic report for use in potential legal action.

Here's a taste of what's to come.

This payment from the Fatality Fund's account shows up on the Slater and Gordon ledger as having come from the AWU WA Branch.

A few other points jump out from these ledgers, which Slater and Gordon - not police - put together in the one file.

Bruce Wilson had an AWU office with staff, accounts people, a secretary, correspondence registers etc in Perth.  From July 1992 he had a similar set up in Melbourne.

The Melbourne AWU office was never located at 54 Victoria Street Carlton South - that's the address for Victoria's Trades Hall Council.  Like other unions, the AWU had a pigeon hole at that address - quite separate though from the union's usual business address.

So why would Slater and Gordon record the address for the Goldfields based Fatality and Death Benefit Fund as Trades Hall Council, Melbourne?  The fact that they did gave Wilson the ability to intercept mail regarding the Fatality Fund protecting it from prying eyes.

The CFMEU demarcation ledger shows Ralph Blewitt as instructing Slater and Gordon, from that Trades Hall Melbourne address.  The ledger has a single $600 bill, issued just days after settlement on the Kerr Street purchase.  As Blewitt says, he never worked from that address, didn't instruct Gillard re a demarcation dispute and didn't authorise payment of that bill.

Here are a few excerpts from the conveyance/mortgage files for Kerr Street showing that the conveyance and mortgage fees were "written off against union".

In circumstances where two suspect round figure bills ($600 Blewitt/CFMEU alleged demarcation and $500 pre-August rule change, both from Trades Hall Council pigeon hole address) were issued shortly after the "fees written off against union" conveyance/mortgage on Kerr Street - well you have to wonder!!!!!!!!
