Complainant hands new evidence in the Shorten rape allegation to Victoria Police

Last night Kathy Sherriff and Peter Faris QC visited Victoria Police to hand over new material for the Shorten rape investigation.

"The police told me (in August 2014) that if new witnesses were located or other evidence was found, then they would look at reopening my case," Kathy said in a statement last night.

Today Kathy said, "Last night (Peter Faris QC) and I provided (to police) a list of witnesses who could provide further evidence. This list was accepted and attached to an email to an officer who investigated my case in 2014. My mobile contact was provided for this officer to call me".

"I seek an urgent response from police".

Victoria Police said at the conclusion of the 2014 investigation, "Investigating police sought advice from the Office of Public Prosecutions, which advised there was no reasonable prospect of conviction".

We don't know the weight of Kathy's new evidence, but we are all entitled to know that it will be assessed by police and the OPP.  Rape is one of the most serious offences on our criminal statutes.

We will keep you posted.

Here's the ABC's report at the time of the 2014 decision not to take Kathy's allegations to court:

Here' Bill Shorten's 21 August 2014 media release:

THE HON BILL SHORTEN

LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

MEMBER FOR MARIBYRNONG

STATEMENT

***Please check against delivery***

Late last year I learned that a claim had been made about me, going back to when I was nineteen.

It was made on social media, when I was elected Opposition Leader.

I will not go into details, except to say that the allegation was untrue and abhorrent.

The allegation was made by someone I knew briefly at that time.

There is absolutely no basis for the claim.

The claim has now been thoroughly and rigorously investigated by police, as is entirely proper.

I fully cooperated to clear my name. And that is what I have done.

I freely answered all questions the police asked of me.

Now the police investigation has concluded, I can make this statement.

This has been deeply distressing for my family.

I am thankful for the love and support of Chloe, and the support of my staff and parliamentary colleagues.

Others who were aware of the investigation have acted with the utmost integrity by leaving the police to do their job.

The police have now concluded the investigation.

The decision speaks for itself.

It is over.

I have no intention of making any further comment.

And here's a recording of Mr Shorten's public comments about the matter.

Media reporter Peter Ford on the Shorten rape allegation

I think Peter makes a very good point.

The former head of the National Crime Authority Peter Faris QC has assessed evidence - he says in part:

This is a serious complaint of rape and Kathy is entitled to her day in court as is Shorten.

This case is similar in circumstances to the Pell case where the victim was the only eye-witness.

As we know in that case a conviction was obtained on that evidence.

Kathy is entitled to be heard in a criminal trial and to have a jury decide guilt or innocence.

I think the mainstream media has an obligation to report on this, particularly given Mr Faris QC's opinion.

Joint statement from Peter Faris QC and alleged Bill Shorten rape victim

Peter Faris QC is the former head of the National Crime Authority.

I know him well.

He is an eminent barrister and an expert in the criminal law.

I have been corresponding with Kathy for some months.

I believe her allegations against Shorten.

This is Kathy with Peter Faris QC in Melbourne today.

And this is their joint statement.

Statement of Kathy Sherriff

In 1986 I was raped by Bill Shorten.

I was 16 years old at the time.

At a later point the matter was reported to Victoria Police.

In August 2014, after a long investigation, the Victorian Police told me they were not proceeding to prosecute Bill Shorten for my rape. I was devastated.

Part of the reason the police gave me was that the Victorian OPP thought there was no reasonable prospect of conviction - because it was only my word against Bill’s. Another reason was that some of the people I said were witnesses could not be found by the police.

The police told me that if new witnesses were located or other evidence was found, then they would look at reopening my case.

Since then I have worked hard to find the people I knew were at the conference that weekend in August 1986 and who knew what happened to me. I looked for all the evidence I could find to support my case. For 5 years this has been my focus so that I can have justice and this matter can go to trial.

My whole life has been impacted by the events of that weekend and until this case is dealt with by the courts, I cannot move past it.

Today, Peter Faris QC has agreed to assist me in my pursuit of justice and we have arranged to meet with Victorian Police to present the new evidence.

We call for my case to be reopened.

I have done this on my own accord without the assistance of the media or the many friends and supporters who have tried to help me in the past or in recent months.

This is my journey alone.

I know that many people will criticise the timing of my actions - but my right to justice and the rights of rape victims everywhere, is more important than politics.

If anyone has any questions they can contact me through face book or contact

Mr Peter Faris QC.

Statement of Mr Peter Faris QC.

I am a retired Criminal Barrister and I am assisting Kathy in her endeavour to get Justice.

In my view the Police should reopen the investigation into this matter and the Office of Public Prosecutions should prosecute Shorten.

And this is my take on the implications of the guilty verdict against Cardinal George Pell - a jury verdict delivered after only one witness, the complainant, gave evidence against the Cardinal.

Malaysian police foil terror attacks with arrests of four suspects

KUALA LUMPUR: Four men have been arrested by Malaysian police for plotting assassinations and big-scale terror attacks in the Klang Valley.

Inspector General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said the four have admitted to being an Islamic State “wolf pack” and were preparing to strike in the first week of Ramadan to avenge the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

"They were planning to murder high-profile personalities whom they accused of not championing Islam or having insulted Islam.

“On top of this, they have also been planning large-scale attacks on Christian, Hindu and Buddhist places of worship as well as entertainment centres in the Klang Valley,” he told reporters at the police headquarters at Bukit Aman.

Muhammad Adib died on Dec 17 last year after he was severely injured amid the chaos at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Selangor, where a riot had erupted over the temple’s relocation.

On the foiled terror attacks, national police chief Abdul Hamid said the suspects – a Malaysian, two Rohingya and an Indonesian – were captured in Terengganu and the Klang Valley between May 5 and May 7.

The mastermind of the wolf pack was a 34-year-old Malaysian construction worker. He was arrested in Kuala Berang, Terengganu, on May 5.

During his arrest, police seized one pistol and 15 bullets, along with six improvised explosive devices (IEDs), each measuring at least 18cm long, the IGP said.

One of the Rohingya men, a 20-year-old waiter, has refugee status, he added.

He was picked up on May 7.

“He admitted to supporting the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) terror group, and had planned to attack the Myanmar Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and continue his jihad in Rakhine,” Mr Abdul Hamid said.

The Indonesian was captured in Subang Jaya, while the last arrest involving another Rohingya took place in Old Klang Road, both on May 7.

Mr Abdul Hamid said the police were still tracking down three other members of the terror cell.

Julie Bishop campaigning for Julie Bishop

Julie Bishop is known as the Emoji Queen of Twitter.

She has a Twitter audience of 280,000 followers, an audience she accumulated courtesy of the Liberals.

So have a look at her Twitter page where you'd hope to find some ringing endorsements for her successor and the Party which put her there.

https://twitter.com/JulieBishopMP

But there's nothing about the Liberal Party.  Not one jot, not one tittle.

Screen Shot 2019-05-14 at 5.52.34 am

There's a promotion for the Walt Disney company, celebration of her footy team (that's right, she's more loyal to her footy team), stuff for charities she prefers and plenty about Julie Bishop.

And her top item today?  This vacuous piece of nothingness with a really famous guy who's on the television at Channel Nine.

Channel Nine got the guernsey because that's where Bishop will be on election night, as you can tell from this vaso-lens Julie extravaganza which you'll also find on Ms Bishop's Twitter feed.

Tony Abbott delivered victory for the Liberals in 2013.

Thanks to Bishop and her ilk, what a waste of 6 years.

How to spot an inexperienced young & naive reporter

How to spot a beginner.

Politician surrounded by TV cameras getting “rock star reception” in school yard.

Put Humphrey B Bear in the middle of a TV camera huddle and walk through any group of kids at lunch time and you’d get similar carry on.

Yet the dimwits in the press gallery fall for this everytime.

And as Ms Norman was subsequently informed, that's St Joseph's, not Edmund Rice.
