Victoria Police has failed in a bid to get international far-right speakers to cough up for the cost of security at their violence-marred events in Melbourne.

The force sent British commentator Milo Yiannopoulos and Canadian Lauren Southern bills after patrolling the speakers’ suburban events in December 2017 and July last year, respectively.

But after seeking legal advice when the duo failed to pay, police have dropped their attempts to recover the costs.

“Victoria Police has recently sought legal advice to clarify what can and cannot be deemed part of a commercial event that incurs charges for police services,” it said in a statement on Friday.

“Providing a police presence and response outside of commercial events, such as in a public space, is part of Victoria Police’s core duties and does not incur a cost.

“Invoices issued for events held in December 2017 and July 2018 have not been paid. Victoria Police will not be seeking to recover costs for services provided for these commercial events.” Yiannopoulos was sent a $50,000 bill following violence between rival protesters outside his Kensington event. Three people were charged.

Southern was reportedly charged $68,000 for resources used at her appearance at Somerton, where protesters clashed with officers.
