NSW Labor wants to become honest, go straight and drop its "whatever it takes" culture. So it's having a review.

One of our readers, Ken just emailed me this great comment!

Michael,

Will Albanese investigate -

Gillard’s evidence to TURC, covering up theft of many hundreds of thousands more?

Evidence to TURC about Shorten short-changing workers?

Gillard and Wilson stealing from Orphans and Widows?

It’s time to let the sunshine in.

Today, we have announced a Review into NSW Labor’s Head Office and administration (more information here).

This will be led by distinguished former Commonwealth Attorney-General Professor Michael Lavarch.

He will have free rein to recommend changes to the role of the General Secretary, Administrative Committee and governance procedures for donations.

The Party will enact these changes.

Members like you deserve a Party that lives up to its high ideals every single day.

You can make a submission until 5pm Friday 25th October, by emailing [email protected].au.

As Attorney-General during the 1990s, Professor Lavarch vetted judges to our nation’s highest courts.

He commenced the Stolen Generation Inquiry that led to the National Apology; he reformed the Racial Discrimination Act; and overturned laws criminalising homosexuality.

He is Chair of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman; and previously the Secretary-General (CEO) of the Law Council of Australia.

So he brings the independence and rigour this Review needs.

This is about a new era of transparency and accountability for NSW Labor into the 2020s.

Here are the 'Reform Process" terms of reference.

Here's another review into NSW Labor from the Rudd/Dastyari era.

Not all that different from this one.

Highest standards.

Zero tolerance.

Strong oversight.

The Labor Party reacts to polls and publicity - it's not guided by ethics and morality.

That's what's sick at the heart of the Party.

And no amount of reviews will fix that.

This is an email from Sam Dastyari to the party faithful today.

Subject: Announcement on reform

Dear XXXX,

Later on today, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will announce a significant package of reforms which will see NSW Labor implement the highest political governance standards of any political party across Australia.

The package will be released in more detail this afternoon.

As the Party rules cannot be altered without holding a Conference in NSW, the rules will be changed by the Federal Executive of the Labor Party on behalf of the NSW Branch and ratified at the next NSW Labor Annual State Conference.

It's time for the Labor Party to focus on the future and not the past, and this is what these changes do.

I'm confident that the thousands of members of the Labor Party who have been waiting for the reform process to move forward will be very happy with the changes being made.

I will email you later today with further details.

Yours sincerely,

Sam Dastyari
NSW Labor General Secretary
