The Duke and Duchess of Sussex face being banned from using their self-anointed ‘Sussex Royal’ label after stepping down as senior royals, it emerged last night.

It is no longer appropriate for the couple, who have relocated to North America with their son Archie, to continue using the term ‘royal’ in their branding, the Queen and senior officials are expected to conclude.

The Duke and Duchess launched their ‘SussexRoyal’ website after announcing they were stepping back from the monarchy in January. They also made applications to trademark the ‘Sussex Royal’ brand for a wide array of products.

However, the couple are understood to have accepted they will not be able to use the title, with a source saying it "needed to be reviewed" after they announced they no longer wanted to be working members of the family.

They first employed the label on their Instagram page after splitting their household from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. They were expected to use the moniker for their new charitable organisation, slated to be launched later in the year.

A royal source said last night: “As The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are stepping back as senior Members of the Royal family and will work towards financial independence, use of the word ‘Royal’, in this context, needed to be reviewed. Discussions are still ongoing.

“As part of the process to transition The Duke and Duchess of Sussex into their new chapter -  planning has been well underway around the launch of their new non profit organisation. Details will be shared in due course.”
