Mahathir Mohamad appears to have quit as Malaysian PM after Anwar Ibrahim got the numbers for top job
I've been hearing rumblings and static about violent revolt in Malaysia during the past 24 hours.
I hope this ends it.
Malaysia’s Mahathir Mohamad appears to have resigned as Prime Minister following an extraordinary weekend in which supporters sought and failed to form a new governing coalition that excluded his anointed successor and coalition partner, Anwar Ibrahim.
The move, still to be confirmed but already reported by Malaysian media, spells the end of the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition and the likely ascension of Mr Anwar to the prime ministership.
Under the constitution the move forces a dissolution of cabinet and a likely vote of confidence by the lower house of parliament in the proposed new leader.
According to sources in Malaysia, Dr Mahathir was due to formally hand his resignation to the country’s king at 4pm (7pm AEDT) after being told at a meeting with Mr Anwar this morning that he no longer had the numbers to support his leadership.
