Vale The Right Honourable Doug Anthony AC CH FTSE, (31 December 1929 – 20 December 2020)
Sunday, 20 December 2020
Doug Anthony, leader of the Country and after its name change The National Party, was Deputy Prime Minister of Australia from 1971 to 1972, and from 1975 until the election of the Hawke Labor Government in 1983.
His family released this statement today,
"He died peacefully in the Heritage Lodge aged-care home in Murwillumbah, northeast NSW, on Sunday morning."
"Although Doug was privileged to serve the people of Australia in high office, he always considered his family to be his greatest legacy and contribution to the world.
"He was very much a man of the Tweed region, and it is fitting that he should depart this life from within the community that he loved so much.
"His family is tremendously proud of his legacy. While always very humble, he made a lasting contribution to the nation, and particularly to people in country Australia."
Here he is delivering the Nationals final election pitch in March 1983.
They don't make them like him any more!
May he Rest in Peace.
