Blah blah blah cuts.
Blah blah blah vital service.
Blah blah blah give them more.
The Morrison Government has continued its cuts to the ABC in last night’s Budget, the Greens say.
Greens Spokesperson for Media and Communications Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said:
“Not only did the Morrison Government fail to restore the millions of dollars of funding the Libs have cut from the ABC year after year, there is no future funding for the Enhanced News Gathering program.
“The ENG program is integral to ABC’s news reporting producing more than 10,000 digital stories every year by state-based news teams delivering more regional and local content. After 9 years it’s embedded in the public broadcaster and funding should be permanent.
“Yet the anti-ABC Liberal Government leaves the program hanging for funding every three years and has again.
“The ABC has been a vital source of information during the Covid pandemic for more than a year now, and helped save lives during the catastrophic summer bushfires immediately before that.
“The Morrison Government is intent on destroying the ABC and public interest journalism, and that will be to the detriment of all Australians.
“The Greens are calling on the Morrison Government to fund the ENG program. It is clear it is core to the work of the public broadcaster and should be part of its ongoing base funding.
“The ABC is facing death by a thousand cuts by the Liberals who can’t handle the public broadcaster doing its job and holding those in power to account, and our democracy is going to be far worse off for it.”
