Momentum is building inside the Nationals for a leadership spill as early as Monday with Barnaby Joyce poised to depose Michael McCormack.
Following a week of visible unrest inside the junior Coalition partner, party sources said Mr Joyce was confident of having the numbers to take back the job he was forced to relinquish in 2018.
“Barnaby’s got the numbers and the plan is to call a spill on Monday,” said a source.
If Mr Joyce succeeds, it will put to an end any prospect of the Morrison government moving further on climate change policy, especially committing to net zero emissions by 2050, something the Nationals vehemently oppose.
Phillip Coorey used to be widely read until he moved to Fairfax - which is probably why many people haven’t heard this story.
