Why is the taxpayer funded ABC spending so much space and time promoting a US sitcom?

A. Because the kids running the ABC just do what they want.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has dropped its final season after more than a year off the air.

It's a bitter-sweet goodbye for the show that launched a hundred memes, challenged stereotypes, spearheaded diverse casting, addressed racial and sexual discrimination, and was saved from cancellation by its fans back in 2018.

Here's what you need to know about season 8 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

How can I watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8 in Australia?

You can watch new episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8 in Australia on free streaming service SBS On Demand every Friday.

A double episode of the final season will premiere on Friday, August 13 about the same time it drops in the US.

It will also be aired later that night on free-to-air channel SBS.

Previous seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine are available in Australia on paid-streaming service Netflix.

How many new episodes are there?

Season 8 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is just 10 episodes long — its shortest season ever.

The show has revealed very little about the final season ahead of its release but a short teaser trailer paints a bleak picture for the squad.

The Nine-Nine are facing very difficult year while Jake and Amy adjust to being new parents amid the COVID pandemic.

Charles Boyle sets the tone with an ominous speech to Jake in the opening of the trailer:

"I'm scared my time with you will be cut short. No more stakeouts or drinks after a long shift or midnight calls when you've had a breakthrough in a case. I've always had this image of us in our 90s hunting down criminals at the retirement home, but I guess that was just a dumb fantasy."

Things are about to get emotional.(GIPHY)

Actor Terry Crews revealed last year that four episodes were scrapped before filming the final season in the wake of George Floyd's murder and the Black Lives Matter movement.

"We've had a lot of sombre talks about it and deep conversations, and we hope through this we're going to make something that will be truly groundbreaking this year," Crews told Access Daily.

Remind me — how did season 7 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine end?

Season 7 ended with Jake and Amy, who were having trouble conceiving, getting pregnant and Amy giving birth to their son McClane 'Mac' Peralta in the precinct.

Not sure if screaming because of pregnancy or because the show is ending.(GIPHY)

Raymond Holt returned as captain of the Nine-Nine after serving out his time as a beat cop.

His nemesis, Madeline Wuntch, died, but she still tried (and failed) to ruin Holt's life from beyond the grave.

Rosa won the Halloween Heist, Terry joined the NYPD marching band, Charles was picked for a special task force, and Scully and Hitchcock ate a fridge full of food when the power went out.

Also, Cheddar was kidnapped for ransom and rescued by Jake and Holt. Sadly, the dog that played Cheddar most often, Stewart the corgi, died in 2019 age 13.

Is this really the end of Brooklyn Nine-Nine?

Yes this really is the end of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, as US network NBC has announced this season is the squad's "one last ride".

Showrunner Dan Goor said earlier this year that ending the show was a difficult decision but "ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honour the characters, the story and our viewers".

"I know some people will be disappointed it's ending so soon, but honestly, I'm grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape," Goor said.

We love that Holt tried.(GIPHY)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been critically acclaimed for its inclusivity and ground-breaking story lines, including the squad being led by Raymond Holt, and openly gay, black captain, Rosa Diaz coming out as bisexual, and the Moo Moo episode where Terry, a black cop, is stopped by a white cop outside his own home.

And despite failing to rate as a scripted drama in the US, the show has cultivated an incredibly strong and passionate fan base.

When Brooklyn Nine-Nine was cancelled by Fox in 2018 due to its low ratings, it was the fans' social media campaign that led NBC to pick up the series for two more seasons, giving them a few more years to shout "NINE-NINE!".
