A message from the Daniel Andrews Police Force

55 years ago this month, a monumental act of bravery from this US Navy doctor.

This 60mm mortar was removed from a 16-year-old South Vietnamese soldier by Captain Harry H. Dinsmore (USN) while serving as chief of surgery at the US Naval Support Activity at Da Nang on 1st October, 1966.

Captain Dinsmore volunteered to remove the still active mortar and was awarded a Navy Cross for his action.

After removal, the mortar was deactivated and is now in the exhibition "The Ten Thousand Day War at Sea: The US Navy in Vietnam, 1950-1975".
