SIMON & SCHUSTER AUSTRALIA TO PUBLISH NEW BOOK BY TRACEY SPICER
The new book will delve into the ways that sexist and racist stereotypes are being embedded into emerging technologies, thus perpetuating them.
According to Spicer, who is a multiple Walkley Award–winning author, journalist and broadcaster invested in the Australian feminist movement, these are important questions that need addressing now.
‘I’m deeply concerned that the progress achieved in recent decades by women and people in marginalised communities is being eroded by the bias built into machines which will control our futures,’ Spicer said.
‘This affects every aspect of our lives, from staying safe in our homes, to applying for a job or home loan, or seeking medical care. It's no exaggeration to say this is a matter of life and death. Right now, a small group of predominantly young white men in Silicon Valley is programming our futures, with little input from the rest of us. This is one of the next frontiers of feminism.’
Literary agent Jacinta di Mase was immediately intrigued by ‘Tracey’s new work exploring the machinations and impacts of Artificial Intelligence through a feminist prism’. She added that ‘Tracey is an incredible communicator who is able to deliver complex ideas and issues to a broad audience and inspire meaningful change.’
The deal was signed by Emma Nolan, non-fiction publisher at Simon & Schuster Australia, who said: ‘Tracey is a writer of the highest calibre and I’m so honoured to be working with her on this project. This will be a remarkable piece of writing that will kick start an important national conversation about this issue.’ Tracey commented: ‘I'm thrilled to sign with global publishing powerhouse Simon & Schuster for my upcoming book about AI bias. My publisher Emma Nolan has a clear vision about how this book can help the next generation of female leaders on the path to true equity.’
Publication is scheduled for 2023.
