Today is National Servicemen's Day. Thank you men. Lest We Forget.
Monday, 14 February 2022
Today is National Servicemen’s Day (yes, it's men only).
We honour the men who undertook compulsory national service for our nation - along with those like Ralph Blewitt who volunteered for national service.
Well done those men.
Lest We Forget.
UPDATE
Australia's Department of Veterans' Affairs is the lead agency in commemorating our veterans and their service.
Today DVA published this:
That statement doesn't just forget about our volunteers - it actively excludes them "we honour the men who undertook compulsory national service".
National Service was only compulsory if your number came up in the ballot. Everyone had to register, but if your marble wasn't drawn, that was the end of it.
I think it's an important matter that should be corrected. I know of several men who volunteered for national service. Their contribution should be recognised too.
So I've written to DVA on the same forum in which they've made their statement:
I'll let you know how we get on.
Lest We Forget.
