Former prime minister Julia Gillard has made a rare appearance on the political stage to endorse Shadow Finance Minister Katy Gallagher as Labor’s concern that Climate 200 independent David Pocock could split the progressive vote in the ACT.
Ms Gillard has written to residents in Canberra and recorded a video endorsement for Senator Gallagher, who holds one of the territory’s two Senate spots.
While the former PM said she doesn't usually “talk about politics”, in her letter she said Senator Gallagher deserves the continuing support of voters.
“There’s been a lot of talk about independents recently,” Gillard said.
“What our federal parliament needs is more strong, experienced women. And that’s why I believe the choice you face this election matters so much.”
She said the voters of Canberra “have the opportunity to make sure we keep one of our best, brightest and strongest women in the Senate”.
“Katy Gallagher is more than just a good friend to me, she is a strong advocate for the values that matter to Canberrans,” Ms Gillard said.
Ms Gillard highlighted Gallagher’s support for a federal anti-corruption body and record on Canberra’s transition to 100% renewable energy.
