Wong/Albanese deliver another kick in the guts to Israel
Thursday, 12 December 2024
Australia has supported two more pro-Palestine votes in the United Nations General Assembly, further straining the nation’s ties with Israel.
Australia voted with 157 other countries to demand “an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza” and the release of Israeli hostages by Hamas.
It joined 158 other countries to support the second resolution condemning Israel’s ban on UNRWA operating on its territory and demanding the agency be given unhindered access to Gaza to go about its work.
The US and Israel were among nine countries to reject both resolutions.
The government’s explanation of its vote was yet to be published.
The votes follow Australia’s support for a series of pro-Palestine resolutions, including motions backing Palestinian statehood and recognising the permanent sovereignty of Palestinians over the occupied territories’ resources.
